New York City approved exit signs and emergency lighting is required to comply with strict regulations and requirements that have been set forth by the city of New York.  Within the five boroughs of New York City, these rules, guidelines, and restrictions must be followed when purchasing New York approved exit signs or emergency lighting.  All the New York approved exit signs and emergency lighting units that are purchased and installed within the 5 boroughs of New York City must be inspector approved by meet all city requirements and regulations.  The New York Building Dept. will provide for their approval as well.  Some areas of New York approved exit signs and emergency lighting are similar to that of a standard exit sign and some area of New York approved exit signs are unique and quite different.  Here are some of the requirements that New York approved exit signs comply with:  They meet UL 924 standards, NFPA, and NEMA building and fire codes.  New York approved exit signs carry a different lettering requirement, letters must be eight inches high and have a one inch stroke .  The Letters or LED’s on the NYC Approved exit sign must be red and have an aluminum or steel housing.  All of these requirements might seem as a bit of an inconvenience however they are set in place for our safety.
